It might be 9 pm, but people are still out on the streets. Everyone is cheering, celebrating, crying happy tears. After 37 years of serving as President for Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe handed in his resignation letter on September 21, 2017. He stated in his resignation letter that “My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire to ensure a smooth, peaceful, and non-violent transfer of power that underpins national security, peace, and stability”.

With this news, many people took to celebrating in the streets with dancing, singing, and claiming the day to be their Independence Day. Reporting from the capital Harare, Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa said, “It’s getting chaotic. Some people still can’t believe this has happened. People say they are really excited and hoping for a better future.”

Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe’s former Vice-President, is the new President because although he was dismissed from his position, a replacement was not yet found. In his inauguration speech, Mnangagwa promised to bring about a number of changes and bring Zimbabwe into a newer, more democratic era.
