YOU NEED TO SLEEP!

As a student, sleep can be overlooked because procrastination and plain idling can lead to late night cramming or even YouTube/movie-binging. Many don’t realize that sleep is a BASIC NECESSITY in life that refreshes you for the next, new day.

(This article is intended to scare you into sleeping. So please. Sleep.)

Everyone already knows that they should get 7-9 hours of sleep a night but not many carry it out. They push sleep to being the last priority in their day and some even believe that sleep is a “waste of time”. True time being wasted is when you are on YouTube watching vine compilations or reaction videos. Many don’t realize the true danger of this harmful habit. YET.

Scary facts of not sleeping include but are not limited to:

  1. Are you in a depressed state? Well, mental illnesses are able to develop quickly when you are sleep deprived. It does not mean that good sleep will immediately make you the happiest person in the world, but it can reduce or prevent yourself from being vulnerable to these depressive states.
  2. “Dirty” brain. Just like your pile of dirty laundry, your brain needs to wash and flush the dangerous toxins and proteins out. Not doing so can leave your toxins remaining and increases your risk of Alzheimer’s. (Future you: “Oh wait, where did I put my keys again?”)
  3. When you lose sleep, you lose clarity. It’ll take longer time for you to make decisions, communicate, remember, and react.
  4. Increased risk of gaining weight/obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and again (just in case you forgot) Alzheimer’s.
  5. Sleep deprived driving. This is a top cause of high-severity road crashes.

Finally, there’s just no reason to push sleep. It’s a better idea to finish that assignment instead of playing your video game and it’s a better idea to sleep than to scroll on Instagram’s explore page.

    This really puts things into perspective on what really is necessary when it comes to our needs for sleep, But it also doesn’t go over board and start heading into the preachy territory which many others can fall into so good job,

    Great article Mary! Fun, easy, and informative! I think the concept of “Dirty brain” is interesting because the way you wrote about it makes it seem like sleep is a detox for the brain, which is an innovative and relevant way to put it.     This article was very interesting because it was really informative and fun to read. Something new that I learned was that if you don’t sleep enough your chances of getting Alzheimer’s is high. After reading this article and after learning some new information I’m going to TRY and sleep early or at least keep my sleeping schedule consistent.

    I totally agree with the points made in your article! Personally, I procrastinate on my homework, so I don’t find myself getting a lot of sleep. I knew that not having sleep is detrimental to one’s health, but I didn’t know that I need as much as 9-10 hours! (I get like…around 3 hours!) This article served as a friendly reminder to get more sleep! Thanks and great job! :))

    This is so TRUE! All I do is scroll on Instagram or try to find YouTube videos to watch until 3:00 AM and I always end up falling asleep in class so thanks for this article! I mean I will TRY to sleep more but… I don’t trust myself (Mary you should follow your own advice by the way..)
