It’s time for the 2018 Winter Olympics games!

In 1988, the Summer Olympics were held in Seoul, South Korea. This year for the first time the Winter Olympics will be hosted from February 9 to February 25, 2018 in PyeongChang, a city located in South Korea. The estimated cost to hold this event is $10 billion, which is five times less than the 2014 Sochi Olympics, which was said to be the most expensive Olympics in history.

To avoid any possible confusion with North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, which is just 50 miles south of the demobilization zone that separates the two countries, South Korea changed the county’s name for the games by capitalizing the “C” in “PyeongChang.”

For the first time, viewers in all of the U.S will have access to live coverage of the games, instead of a delayed replay.

Here are a few facts about the Olympics:

  • Germany reaffirms its participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
  • November 1, 2017 – A flame will continue to burn in all weather conditions, and that will withstand the strong winds and heavy snowfall that can be expected in the Republic of Korea. This flame arrived in the Republic of Korea, 100 days before the Games are scheduled to begin.
  • November 7, 2017 – The POC announces that the 13 sporting venues are currently 99.7% completed.
  • November 17, 2017 – The Nigerian Bobsled Team qualifies for the 2018 Olympics becoming both the first Nigerian team, and the first African women competitors to be represented at the Winter Olympics.
  • December 5, 2017 – The IOC announces that Russia has been banned from participating in the 2018 Olympics because they were found guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program.
