Many are curious as to what “Upcycled” is.

Well, let us explain now: Upcycled is the re-use of discarded objects to produce products of higher quality or value than the original.

The essence of the Upcycled project is very unique, as it allows young scholars to be creative with what they could do with recyclables. This helps them to bring awareness to their community that so many things could be done to help the environment by creating their own objects with recyclables.

On Wednesday 31, 2018, Ms. Gomez’s 7th-grade class held an exhibit to present the students’ Upcycle creations. There, we documented their outstanding, creative projects, which ranged from brooms to lava lamps, made using water bottles, shoe boxes and many more. A contest, which was held at the exhibition to determine which three projects were regarded as the best, encouraged visitors to vote for the project that impressed them the most.

Ms. Gomez counted the votes coming in and announced the results accordingly. Julio Martinez came in third place with his model lava lamp. Isis Garcia, who made a plastic broom, was given second place. And last but not least, Lana Garrido’s beautiful bird feeder was awarded first.

Although I wasn’t present at this event, it is great to see young students taking action by reusing discarded objects to create new creations. Since our school is based on GPO’s, I believe that the students have utilized these GPO’s effectively!!
