October, the hottest month of 2017, showed many signs of extreme heat; the temperature even reached the triple digits. Temperatures in cities and towns across Southern California surged to levels many people didn’t expect. Some areas in California were even on the verge of 110 degrees. On Tuesday, October 24, one location hit 109 degrees. This has been the hottest weather observed on record in the United States so late in the year!

Downtown, Los Angeles set their new record to 104 degrees, shattering the record of 99 degrees set in 1909. Many beaches, like Newport Beach and Long Beach, hit 100 degrees, breaking the record of 1965. It has been reported that these temperatures were about 20 to 30 degrees above normal. Southern California didn’t just break these records but it utterly crashed them.

The image above is an illustration of the areas in California affected by the heat. You can easily tell that there are many areas that have reached over 100 degrees.

This heat wave has caused fire incidents in the Angeles National Forest near Mt. Wilson Observatory, and northeast of Los Angeles, California on October 17, 2017, as well as in the San Gabriel Valley. The fire covered about 50 acres and are 70% contained. Helicopters had to drop a large amount of water on the fire in order to prevent any further outspread. The fire weather will remain critical until Wednesday, October 25.  Many people had to stay hydrated and limit their outdoor activities to the early morning and evening hours. Many people get dehydrated because they don’t sweat a lot during dry heat but after this record-shattering, the heat wave is expected to begin a cool down; California is expected to cool down to the lower to mid-70s.

The image above shows how history is being made as L.A “bakes” under the October sun.
