Robert Mugabe resigned his position after serving 37 years as the president of Zimbabwe. He handed his resignation letter on September 21, 2017. The people of Zimbabwe are cheering, celebrating and crying tears of joy at 9 p.m.  because of Robert Mugabe’s resignation. He stated in his resignation letter that “My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire to ensure a smooth, peaceful, and non-violent transfer of power that underpins national security, peace, and stability”.

The people are singing, dancing and claiming that the day of Robert Mugabe’s resignation is the Day of their Independence. Reporting from the capital Harare, Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa said, “It’s getting chaotic. The people have waited long for this day to happen, the people of Zimbabwe are excited for their new hopes to a better future.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe’s former Vice-President, is the new President because although he was dismissed from his position, a replacement was not yet found. In his inauguration speech, Mnangagwa promised to bring about a  number of changes and bring Zimbabwe into a newer, more democratic era.
